Volunteers Policy

Scope

  • Volunteers can participate in the administrative aspects of the program (sticking labels on tags, sorting tags, stringing tags etc) or by volunteering on the collection day as a driver and/or sorter in the ‘giving grotto’ sorting location

Eligibility

  • Age restriction: as agreed by the board (currently 18+, or 14+ if accompanied by parent/guardian)

  • GGT will consider involving anyone who wishes to volunteer with the organisation. Individuals may only be placed if their needs as volunteers match the needs of the organisation.

Recruitment and Selection

  • Volunteers may get involved via one of our charitable agencies (e.g. COPE volunteers)

  • Volunteer positions may be advertised on various social media platforms as necessary.

  • Volunteers are selected based on requirements of the role, experience, skills, availability and interest.

Induction

  • On the collection day, volunteers can expect to receive a planned induction with the ‘head elf’. This induction involves, but is not limited to, general housekeeping, volunteer policy and agreement overview, terms and nature of the role and, as appropriate, further policies and procedures.

Support

  • We will use WhatsApp as our primary method of communication and you will be added to the ‘GGT Volunteers’ group

  • We provide references for current and former volunteers on request

  • We expect volunteers to adhere to the policies and procedures of our organization (this includes maintaining the confidentiality of all privileged information to which they are exposed while volunteering).

Representation of GGT

  • Volunteers must seek prior approval from GGT before undertaking any representation on behalf of the organisation. This includes, but is not limited to, statements to the media, joint initiatives with other organisations and agreements involving contractual or financial obligations.

Expenses

  • Volunteers will not be reimbursed for any costs associated with the collection day.

Insurance

  • Insurance is provided by GGT to cover all volunteers on the collection day while at the sorting location working on behalf of and at the direction of GGT. However, drivers using their cars in connection with their voluntary work must inform their own insurance company to ensure adequate and continued cover.
